Mission Admission

What is it?  It’s the fact that November is right around the corner and it’s time to get in high gear with college applications.  Some schools have December 1 deadlines, especially for scholarship programs.  Most schools deadlines are in February, which is not too far off.  I always recommend to my students that they submit all admissions applications before the Christmas holidays (by Thanksgiving if you are really ambitious).  So here is a quick checklist for the month of November:

1. Complete your essays and make sure you have at least two separate people review them – same with Activities Resumes.

2. Complete and submit all applications online – almost all schools use some kind of online application nowadays (check out the Texas Common App for all Texas public schools – and several private – www.applytexas.org).

3. Make sure all test scores have been sent to your schools of choice – visit www.sat.org or www.actstudent.org to send score electronically to schools.

4. Visit the counselors’ office and have official transcripts sent to your schools – make sure you also call the college awarding you Dual Credit if you are in any of those classes – you have a transcript there as well.

5. Double check with any teachers, counselors, etc. who are writing you recommendations and make sure they know the deadline to mail those letters.

These are the basics.  As always, each school will have different requirments, so make sure you know what you have to do.  And don’t be scared – get it done now so you can enjoy Christmas (if you aren’t running to the mailbox everyday!).
